About the Marshalls: We both grew up in rural Queensland, Wendy in a Christian family and David in a nominal family. David committed his life to the Lord as a teenager in the context of a church youth group. He left rural life to go to Brisbane to study math at university and graduated as a High School teacher. He then taught math for seven years. Wendy gives thanks for her Christian upbringing. By the time the question as to whether or not she was a Christian, occurred to her, she was already believing. She left Toowoomba to study Occupational Therapy in Brisbane. After graduation she worked both in the country and the city in a variety of jobs. We met on an OMF mission study tour to Indonesia in 1993, though we didn't get together for a few more years. However, that tour was a landmark event that furthered both our interests in mission. When we married nearly 4 years later we were both open to what God would have us do for the future. Not long after that we went to International Outlook (Queensland annual mission event) and were challenged as to whether we had any compelling reasons to stay in Australia - especially given the enormous need overseas. We immediately started applying to OMF, ending up in Japan in December 2000. Originally our plans were for teaching missionaries' children but God's plans were different. We ended up with the opportunity to learn the Japanese language and culture in a much deeper way than would otherwise have been possible if we had gone straight to a school. In our four years in Japan we also spent a year and a half as a part of a church planting team, a valuable experience. Along the way we have had two boys - Callum (1999) and Douglas (2002). They are very lively and keep us on our toes. We are very pleased that Callum had the opportunity to go to a Japanese kindergarten and learn to speak Japanese well. After having spent four years learning Japanese language and culture as well as training in church planting, it makes sense to continue to serve in Japan. We want to go back and we commit our way to our God, who alone knows the future.
