University of Cape Town - Student Y PDF Print E-mail
southafricaAfrica is one of the most unique places in the world with wide-ranging natural beauty, history, culture, and languages. However, Africa has and continues to face many difficult problems: extreme poverty, AIDS, crime, and civil wars. But there is hope. For example, in the 20th century, Christianity became the religion of the majority in sub-Saharan Africa. Although this is praise worthy, much work remains to spread the gospel and to make disciples of the Lord Jesus Christ in this place.

With that in mind, WPC supports the efforts of the Student YMCA at the University of Cape Town (UCT). The student Y is an evangelical campus society open to all students at UCT. It is one of the oldest Christian societies at UCT (founded in 1947) and was established to proclaim the importance and relevance of Jesus Christ to every aspect of life. The student Y offers several aspects of mission, including bible teaching, evangelism, community involvement, and pastoral care.

WPC Bull Creek is supporting 2 staff members at the student Y. A short biographical sketch for each member is provided below. Please consider praying for these workers for the Lord as they serve the needs of the peoples of Africa.

Mr. Mawethu Ncaca

Mawethu is married to Lisa, who is an American who is doing very well saying her own surname! Lisa is famous for beating on a mugger in Durban, sending him running.

Darlington_and_Hillary_MushambiI (Darlington Mushambi) was born and raised in Zimbabwe, and in 2001 I went to Cape Town to study law at UCT.
After a lifetime (18 years) of knowing about God, hearing Him preached at church every Sunday (and twice a week while I was at boarding school) He finally opened my ears and eyes to hear Him when I was in my first year of varsity, through a Romans bible study taking place in my residence and run by the student Y. Over a period of a year, I wrestled with God's grace, refusing to accept that salvation could be that 'simple', and I yielded sometime in my second year. An exhilarating, painful, but excruciatingly beautiful time of my life!

After practicing law for a year back in Zimbabwe I found myself investing more and more time in leading a Bible Study at my work and in my involvement at church, until I found that I needed to learn more about the Bible to deal with all the questions I was confronted by. This led me to GWC in 2006, where I met my wife Hilary, who was also studying her BTh with the long-term goal of becoming a missionary.

Both of us shared a passion for student ministry, Hilary having fallen away from her faith due to a lack of Christian accountability at university in Pretoria, so we were both excited by the opportunity to serve in ministry at the student Y, where we could reach and encourage students to follow Jesus on UCT campus and beyond.
