1. Children were included in the covenant of grace in the Old Testament, through the sign of circumcision, Genesis 17:2, and in the New Covenant's Hebrews 8:6) God has not changed His intentions toward our children, Acts 2:38, 39! Circumcision has been replaced by baptism, Colossians 2:11, 12 (like Passover has been replaced by Lord's Supper)
2. Even though bringing someone under the protection of God's covenantal sign does not guarantee that every member possesses true faith (Heb 4:1-11), that does not mean we withhold the sign, rather we apply the sign in faith and raise our children in the faith!
3. The children of unbelievers are unholy, but the children of believers are set apart to God, 1 Cor 7:14. This distinction is found in the OT, Exodus 12, and continues in the NT.
4. There is an unbroken record in church history of the practice of infant baptism. Although tradition is of secondary value, it is important for we know that the earliest Christians baptized their children with the command of those trained by the apostles. If those early Christians departed from the Apostle's teaching, where was the debate as there was with so many other doctrines.
5. Baptism is a work of God, not man. Baptism is not a sign of the believer's commitment to God. It is the sign and seal of God's promise to save all who do not reject their baptism by refusing to trust in Christ. In the NT, as adults came to faith in Christ and were baptized, they evidently baptized their children, Acts 16:31-33. The same was true of Abraham, who believed before he was circumcised, but then had his children circumcised as infants, Genesis 17:11, 12. The continuity between the OT and NT is so strong that not to baptize children of believers would require instruction to repeal.
Baptism of our children is one of the most special, faith-exercising, peace-giving actions we can take. Our children are in God's hands! We baptize them in hope, and hold on to the promise of Isaiah 59:12 and rest in the goodness of God! (From WPCBC news notes 22nd Feb 2009)
